The Dash

In a daily blog of already over thirty-five hundred postings it is expected that certain themes will be repeated and some subjects reexamined. Today’s theme and subject is such a one. I find it ironic that on gravestones the entirety of a lifetime is symbolized by a small dash between two dates. Obviously we all hope to leave something more behind than just that little dash.

I first heard the song that I am attaching my karaoke style cover of below at the end of Ben Affleck’s movie The Accountant some years ago. As a poet, writer, speaker, singer-songwriter, and teacher myself, I find that this song more that others expresses the heartfelt desire of most of us to leave something behind for our children, for our families, and for our friends – more than just a fading memory of our brief dash through time and space.
