Time With My Son

About a year ago, my son Jonathan (Jay) took me to see a sixty acre piece of property near Bon Wier, Texas that he had purchased for hunting and recreation. It is heavily wooded and at the time he had permission to use a neighbor’s access road to get back to a power line right of way that enabled us to see much of the property from his pickup truck.

The drive there from Houston is almost three hours so it was the first time that I had gotten to spend the better part of a day with my son in quite a long time. It was a wonderful ride there and back and getting to share even for the few hours that we were there a place that means so much to him was quite remarkable. Jay shared that it was his dream to one day own adjacent property bringing his holdings to one hundred acres. I remarked, “Like the hundred acre wood in the Winnie the Pooh stories.”

Thinking at the time it was becoming increasingly more likely that I would outlive Jay’s mom and my lovely and loving wife Linda Lee I asked Jay if he would allow me to park a small camper trailer on his property and live there someday. He said, “Sure dad, that would be fine.” So our dreams at that moment began to intertwine.

Jay said he had his eye on two pieces of property right next to his that belonged to a brother and sister who had inherited them from their mom. He had contacted them several times with an offer to purchase both tracts but had gotten no response. On my second or third visit to the property with my son I asked him if I could contact the brother and see if he would be willing to sell his fifteen and a half acres to me. Jay’s sixty acres only had about a hundred yards of highway frontage on FM 1416 and this would give him considerably more. If I could also acquire the sister’s fifteen and a half acres together we would have almost a mile of highway frontage making it a much more valuable piece of property and closer to making Jay’s Hundred Acre Wood dream come true.

Last November I got the deed to the brother’s half and in March the sister’s. With my now thirty one acres we are only nine acres away from the one hundred acres. We are currently helping the owners of another approximately three point nine acres also with frontage on FM 1416 adjacent to my northern property to get the probate completed on the great uncle’s will leaving the land to their mother and since she has also passed a certificate of heirship filed then they will have title to the property so they can sell it to us. After that we only need to acquire only a few more acres to together total one hundred. I already bought several baseball style caps with

“100 Acre Wood

1000 Fm 1416

Bon Wier, Texas”

embroidered on the front and

“Bon Weir Texas”

on the back.

In a little over an hour I will be meeting my son at his home in Kingwood, Texas about twenty-six miles north of where my wife and I live in Houston to ride with him yet again to the Hundred Acre Wood (almost) in Bon Weir, Texas.

I do so enjoy spending time with my son and sharing this dream come true together. I just might stick around awhile longer to see how this wonder dream unfolds.

David James White
