We The People

Here in the United States we the people celebrate the Fourth of July with picnics, parades, fireworks, and lots of red, white, and blue decorations. It is a big annual birthday party for our country and we as a people follow Muppet’s Band leader Doctor Tooth’s mantra to the letter at least on this day: “There’s a party all the time for them that choose.” Not a Republican Party or a Democratic Party, but a Party of the people, by the people and for the people.

Weather permitting there will be backyard barbecues and families and friends getting together all across the nation to celebrate the founding of this democratic republic experiment. The line from President Lincoln’s address dedicating the Gettysburg Battle Field as a national monument comes to mind where he spoke of the Civil War having tested whether this government of the people, by the people and for the people could long endure.

We are being tested again especially after the passage yesterday of the Big Not So Beautiful Bill that will redirect billions of federal tax dollars from Medicaid and food subsidy programs for the less fortunate to the continuation of tax cuts and subsidies for the ultra rich. Is our government to be of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich? Has the government that the Constitution and Lincoln spoke of ceased to exist? I hope not.

Today as we wave flags, picnic, and set off fireworks I hope that we the people will remember what the Preamble to the Constitution proclaims and rededicate our efforts to insuring that this nation does not perish from the earth.
