The Secret Revealed

A famous quote goes something like this, “Nothing is hidden that shall not be revealed, nothing whispered in secret that shall not be shouted from the housetops.” We usually think of secrets as something to be kept hidden to protect our national security or to keep things from being widely known that might hurt someone or many people.

Over fifty years ago, when I was a soldier, I had a Top Secret security clearance because as a teletype repairman in Top Secret communication facilities I was exposed to high level secret military messages that came across the teletype equipment. I purposely avoided reading the traffic first of all because it was usually “need to know” and I did not and secondly because I did not want to know. I think keeping secrets causes more problems than it solves – parents keeping secrets from children, children from parents, husbands from wives, wives from husbands, and governments from the people. Secrets destroy relationships, families, nations.

The truth will always out and when we find out that we have been lied to it hurts and changes things. An Australian lady named Rhonda Byrne wrote a book and made a film some years back called The Secret which started me on a quest to discover things hidden that I never wanted to know before. I spent most of the first half of my life in a tiny box believing what I had been told or fed without questioning it for I had been taught from a child that questioning just showed lack of faith.

I have come to believe that on the contrary not questioning just shows a lack of good sense and that believing everything we are told, fed, and have read is both foolish and a very difficult posture to sustain. A far better way to experience life is to follow a maxim that I adopted over twenty years ago now: “I discard any belief that no longer serves me.”

I do not seek to know your secrets only to share the biggest one that I discovered when I finally figured out Who and Whose I am. And what an eye opener that secret revealed was and is. There is a line at the conclusion of the chorus in Dionne Warwick’s song entitled No Night Long. The line goes, “Follow me like you used to do, I can still show you who you are.” I simply add whose.

Need a clue? Look up what God’s reply to Moses question was when Moses asked, “Whom shall I say is sending me?” And also Peter’s answer to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” Still unsure, how about Jesus plain statement, “As I am so are you in this world.” It is no secret Who and Whose you are.
