Father’s Day Thoughts
Today we honor our fathers and those of us fortunate enough to have gotten to also play that role get to receive a little of the spotlight too. Getting to be a dad is one of my proudest accomplishments. I used to have a tee-shirt that read, “Proud to be a Dad.”
My dad was proud of his two sons even if his generation was a bit awkward trying to show it. I was proud of my daughter and enjoyed her for almost thirty-two years. She died almost thirteen years ago just a few days before her birthday.
My son turned thirty-five last April and I am so very proud of him. This is his second Father’s Day. Like me he had his little girl first and she loves her daddy so much. Most men dream of having a son to play ball with, to teach to hunt and fish and are surprised that boys usually have a closer relationship with their moms and that it is daughters that more often want to play ball and even hunt and fish with their dads. And why not?
Those of us who have lost our dads miss them terribly on this day especially, but take comfort in our children and our children’s children. These family holidays are hardest on those who have out lived their families or never had children.
It is those I especially wish a happy Father’s Day and hope today is filled for them and everyone with the happiest and best memories of times with their dads and other father-figures in their lives.
