To Make You Feel My Love
Another great love song, Nature Boy, one of Nat King Cole’s earliest hit songs, says in its concluding line, “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” Pay close attention to today’s song and you will hear beyond my obvious missed notes and flubbed lyrics that which is the true yearning of every lover’s heart – to communicate their love to those they love.
I sang along with today linked song for over ten years mistaking one of the lines entirely. The verse I am talking about goes:
“I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue
I’d go crawling down the avenue
There ain’t nothing that I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love.”
I misheard the line and sang the second phrase of the first line of that verse: “I’d go blind for you.” My mistaken version was a promise indeed more severe than going black and blue, but to me it sounded more in line with “There ain’t nothing that I wouldn’t do.” Double negative aside that is the promise of true love as portrayed in the Gospel story: “For God so loved the world he gave his son…” and from the son’s own perspective, “No greater love has any man than to lay down his life for his friends.”
It is not often that we get such an opportunity to demonstrate our love like that by giving someone a needed kidney, bone marrow, or our blood, let alone our eyes, still there are a myriad of less painful ways to make them feel our love.
Our undivided attention for just a few minutes is the easiest and perhaps truest proof of our undying love – simply investing our time. Jim Croce did not live to record many songs, yet the few that he did still touch hearts today. One of my wife and my favorites is Time In A Bottle. It begins:
“If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save every day till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you.”
Every morning, for a few minutes I give my undivided attention to this blog, to you my friends. Why, you ask. Listen carefully to today’s song and you will know the answer to that question.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
