In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning

Those who follow this blog know that I am a life-long Frank Sinatra fan. Two of my earliest recollections involve his music. One was riding in my dad’s pick-up truck as a small boy. Dad who was mostly a country music fan, nevertheless was singing in his best voice a song quite popular at the time, Young At Heart. I still smile every time I hear the words, “Fairytales can come true, it can happen to you if you’re young at heart.”

Another early memory was sitting in a movie theater, a more hallowed place to me than church, before the movie started, listening to popular music playing on their wonderful sound system. The song that impressed and moved me the most was Sinatra’s High Hopes. That song has encouraged me throughout my life.

Today my Frank Sinatra selection is In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, one of his best. There is a line in another song that was quite popular some years back called Down In Jamaica. In the song about a broken hearted guy it says, “He puts on Sinatra and starts to cry.” We have, most all of us, experienced the ache and loneliness of missing someone that we love especially in the wee small hours of the morning. The man in the Jamaica song, like many of us, found a good way to deal with his heartache. Thank you, Frank, for being there for us.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David James White
