Focused Attention

Yesterday, my twenty-one month old granddaughter, Emma Grace, came by with her dad and mom to wish my wife a happy Mother’s Day. They did not stay long, still the four of us adults were able to play one game of Yahtzee due in large part to the way Emma’s favorite TV show, Netflix’s Cocomelon, maintains her focused attention as pictured above.

Oh, Emma took a few breaks from her program to roll the dice for her grandmother and her dad, but I watched Emma with focused attention as she enjoyed the Cocomelon gang and sang along with the show’s familiar tunes.

I am glad and grateful for every moment that I get to spend with Emma, her parents, my wife, and you my dear friends. I would like to paraphrase a motto that hung on my parents’ living room wall when I was growing up: “Just one life ‘twill soon be past and only what is focused on will last.” Or as Jesus put it, “Where your treasure is there will your heart be also.” And indeed where our attention is focused, that is our treasure.
