Happy Mother’s Day!

Today I celebrate my 75th Mother’s Day on this particular adventure in time and space. I consider myself fortunate that for the first fifty of those years I got to share them with my loving Mama, Alene Florence Davidson White. A little over three months after the fiftieth of those Mother’s Days, and a little over three years after my Dad passed of a heart attack or stroke, my Mama ended her life by her own hand.

A little over a year after my mom died, I put together a little book, a tribute to her called Another Side of Mama, consisting of a few poems that I had written to and about her.

Like most boys, I loved my Mama to distraction, even though the song The Moon’s A Harsh Mistress reminds me of the fierceness of her mothering style. Alene loved both her sons fiercely and was a Mama Bear in attempting to shield us from people or things she thought might hurt us.

In the Old Testament story of Isaac, Abraham’s son of promise through his aging but adored wife Rachel, Abraham sends his servant back to his home town to find a wife for his son from among his people. The servant brings back the beautiful Rebekah. And we are told that Isaac was greatly comforted in the death of his mother by his wife Rebekah.

I, like Isaac, have been much comforted in the loss of my mama by my lovely and loving wife Linda Lee. Thirty-five years ago I made her a mama and she has loved our son Jonathan David James Wallace White (Jay) every bit as fiercely as my Mama loved me. She is a wonderful mother and has always called me Baby and I her.

Happy Mother’s Day, Linda Lee, and all you mothers out there. And to all who wanted to be mothers but could not be, yet still found ways to channel all that mother-love to where it was needed most. This world would indeed “be cold without the warmth of a woman’s good, good heart.”
