What A Wonderful World

Today is my cousin Judy’s birthday. She has about seven months seniority on me. It is not polite, they say, to ask or to give a woman’s age and so I will not but only say that on November 22nd I will celebrate my seventy-fifth birthday. That’s right three quarters of a century. For nineteen fifties babies who grew up being told not to trust anyone over thirty, Judy and I have had to change our minds more than a few times to adjust in this ever changing world in which we live.

Some folks do not do well with change. How sad for them. I embrace change for it is one of the things in life that you can most count on. “This too shall pass (or change)” can often be a very comforting thought especially when a particular situation you are dealing with is difficult.

People who try to hold on to a past that if it ever really was, was so only ever so briefly, seem to me like the proverbial person who throws happiness away with both hands. One line in my daily mantra comes to mind, “This is the day that the Lord and I have made, we will rejoice in it.”

When you understand the plan that we are at least co-responsible for whatever situation we find ourselves in, it puts things in perspective. By our thoughts, words, and deeds today we create our tomorrows. And if that be true, our today is always merely the product of our collaboration with our higher self yesterday.

Happy birthday, Judy. I hope it is everything you hoped, dreamed, and planned yesterday. Actually it is quite impossible for it to be anything less or more, for I believe that we are the authors of our fate, the masters of all we survey. What a wonderful world in which to be alive.

Your friend, fellow traveler, cousin, and brother,

David James White
