Life Is A Hunt

I heard a lady comedian once talking about the differences between women and men and found her comments funny, but at the same time astute, keenly perceptive. She said what we all recognize that women generally love to shop and that men love to hunt and that there is a not so subtle but quite distinct difference in these approaches to life. Women are forever looking but seldom buying and even then often returning the things they thought they wanted. While men decide first what they need and go after it or seeing something they think they need just “bag it” and proudly bing it home. The comedian’s punch line was: “When I buy some new earrings I drape them across the hood of the car and tell my husband, ‘See what I bagged today’ and he understands perfectly.”

In a line from one of my favorite books and movies, The Time Traveler’s Wife, the time traveler’s soon to be very conservative father-in-law tells him “Life is a hunt.” Though using guns to kill animals is not appealing to the time traveler, his unusual life is nevertheless quite a hunt as he is forever finding himself in new and challenging situations where he must immediately hunt and find the necessities to survive.

As there is a difference between shopping and hunting there is also a difference between wants and needs. Wants are often harder to pin down and can change as circumstances change. Needs are usually more definable and less likely to change or go away till satisfied. It is often difficult to determine even for ourselves what we truly want and even more perplexing for men to discover what women truly want. Men’s wants though a bit more basic and easier to figure out can be sometimes baffling to women as well.

Needs as Maslow’s list above are usually easier for us to get our heads around.

Yesterday my darling granddaughter experienced her first Easter Egg Hunt. Soon enough she will be shopping for Easter outfits and other outfits as girls and women do, yet for a few moments yesterday Emma Grace was just hunting for colored eggs hidden in plain sight.

Pretty little girl in a pretty outfit!

Life is a hunt. Happy hunting.
