Seek and You Shall Find
As a follow-up to yesterday blog about the Three Step and Two Step Solution (To finding happiness in life) today I would like to address Jesus’s three step solution that is abbreviated by the acronym ASK for:
Ask and you shall receive.
Seek and you shall find.
Knock and it shall be opened unto you.
First let me say that I recall from ninth grade English class that the word shall is a more definite and certain word than will. That may sound a bit counter intuitive, yet when we say something will follow something else it is actually a weaker (may or may not happen) statement than to say it shall follow (most assuredly happen.)
Today let us take a look at the second letter in ASK – Seek and you shall find. Did you ever notice that what happens, what follows, what comes to us is more often that not what we expect? What we see is according to what we are looking out for, our outlook paints the picture we see. Our beliefs, opinions, philosophy, and politics are all examples of finding answers that fit what we already know or think.
Another example of this is the way that instead of “innocent until proven guilty” we have a tendency more often to get that backwards, the other way around, in our criminal justice system.
A line from a song comes to mind: “It’s just my luck to be holding the matches when the fire trucks show up and there’s no one else to blame.” Many an innocent man or woman has been found guilty of a crime just because there was no one else to blame.

We find what we are looking for and have a tendency to always give greater weight to the evidence that supports our presuppositions – what we believe to be true is true for us no matter what. Only divine intervention can get us to change our hearts and minds and even then our hearts and minds must be open.
