Checks & Balances

Yesterday, I wrote about balance and today I would like to expand on that thought a little. The framers of the U.S. Constitution were pretty wise. They knew that the original founding document, The Articles of Confederation, was not working, and even though their respective state legislatures had only given them instructions to revise the Articles they knew that they would have to scrap it entirely and write a new document creating a strong enough central government to keep in check the thirteen states that wanted to act like separate countries.

Some erroneously think these men did not account for self-interest. They may not have envisioned political parties, special interest groups and corporations with paid lobbyists to promote legislation, executive orders, and federal court decisions that would favor them, but they knew self interest would prevail and they counted on it to be the final check and balance when the three houses of government that they set-up to keep each other in check did not do so.

The natural enemy of tyrannical governments, would be dictatorships, and empires is the ole “I must be king of the hill, and have all the marbles” mentality. They never last, but self-destruct eventually. A familiar Christian phrase comes to mind, “”Even so, Lord Jesus, come quickly.”
