He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother?

As the song says it is indeed “a long, long road with many a winding turn that leads us to where, who knows when.” And yet sometimes we do seem to act as if this or that brother or sister was an encumbrance or burden for us to bear.

The story goes that during the Korean War in the early nineteen-fifties, that was about the time I first arrived, this go round, that some G.I.’s came upon a young Korean boy carrying another boy as big or bigger than he was on his back. The boy being carried was wounded and the G.I.’s asked the boy doing the heavy lifting if he needed some help with his heavy load and he replied, “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.”

What a better, brighter, and more wonderful world this would be if we all were truly aware of Who and Whose we are and that we are all brothers and sisters all in one big and beautiful loving family, a family where no brother or sister is ever too heavy a burden to bear, but each an important and special co-inheritor of the divine legacy that is ours to share.
