The Birthday Boys
Every year, usually on or about the third Saturday in February my Houston family gathers at a restaurant to celebrate the birthdays of my nephew Greg and my niece Michelle’s husband Jacob’s birthday. I love these guys and they have been over the years family that I have spent more time with than my own brother Robert who lives near Atlanta, Georgia.
My connection with Greg and Jacob is through my wife Linda Lee’s sister Sarah. Greg and Michelle are her children and Jacob is her son-in-law. In-laws or out-laws we are family and enjoy each other’s company and eating together and catching-up on all the holidays and birthdays that we can. Several times I have dressed up as a clown for these occasions continuing a tradition I started when Greg, Michelle, and their older brother Gilbert were children.
This afternoon at 5:30 pm the plan is to gather at a Shogun’s nearer where the Birthday Boys live just north of Houston. Their birthdays are within a couple of days of one another so we celebrate both on the Saturday closest to their actual birthdays.
Family is so important and family get-togethers are some of my fondest memories. For years before I retired I missed many of these celebrations because I was working out of town. I felt the lost of connection these gatherings help to provide. I do not plan to miss another if I can help it.
Family is meant to enjoy and it is where we practice loving our larger family.
