From The Heart

Well, the perfect Valentine’s Day gift did not arrive in time for me to give it to my wife. And I suspected that the extra fee for speedy delivery was just another extra revenue source for the seller, like the forever roses gift box was as well. But, then like many of you I grew up in a culture that trained me first and foremost to be a consumer. I did get a notice this morning that they were preparing to ship the item. Whenever it arrives I will give it to my wife and hope she likes it.

The sales person’s job is to create a desire for what they are selling and to extract the highest price possible, promising the moon and stars and oh yes speedy delivery. I knew there was little to no chance it would arrive in time for Valentines, yet desire often overwhelms our senses if we give into it.

I have long prided myself regarding my sales resistance, but my long and continuous programming to buy now and pay later still kicks in if I am not on guard.

I did resist the temptation to pay $49 for a $10 bouquet of flowers instead opting for a $5 box of Hershey’s chocolate kisses in a heart-shaped box. I got a box for her sister and her mother as well.

I did buy my wife a little rose-shape balloon on a stick to put in a red single rose vase along with our first daffodil and first azaleas blossom of 2025.

Oh, and her favorite chocolates – Queen Anne’s Cordial Cherries. The perfect gift anytime for Linda Lee Stokes, my Queen of Hearts.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
