A Hard Row To Hoe Versus A Lighter Load
For far too many people even Christians and those who believe in a benevolent and loving higher power, by whatever name they choose, life sadly seems, if you listen to their tale of hard work and woe, a very hard row to hoe. If you are unfamiliar with that farming idiom it means “tough and hard work.”
I am reminding of a song we sang in church when I was a boy that is based on Jesus words when he said, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” I heard a preacher explain that farming idiom and he said oxen usually were teamed together with a yoke around their necks against their shoulders so they could pull a heavy load sharing the burden equality, but that Jesus yoke was designed so that he carries the heavy load and we the lighter side of the yoke.
The chorus to the song I mentioned above goes, “His burden is easy, his burden is light. I’ve found it so, I’ve found it so. His service is my sweetest delight, His blessings ever flow.”
I believe the follow three phrases that I recently added to my daily mantra are absolutely true no matter how thing may appear:
1. I Ask whatsoever I will, believing I shall receive.
2. I Seek and I shall find.
3. I Knock and it shall be opened unto me.
Jesus said that we have not, not because we do not work hard, but because we do not ASK – Ask, Seek, and Knock. Life is not meant to be hard work or a Hard Row To Hoe but to be a Walk In The Park or as a familiar origin story goes, a walk in a beautiful garden. Jesus chose Gethsemane so we can have Eden again. His yoke is easy and his burden is light because he takes the heavy load leaving us the lighter one.
Still there is a place and purpose for our work and our actions in the Manifestation or Creation process. James in his short letter says “Faith without works (actions) is dead.” By our little efforts we show the great Universe (my favorite name for our Higher Self, or our Higher Power, our benevolent and loving God) what direction we want to go in and what it is we truly want. And that looses the flood gates of our loving and infinite source.
I did a little work yesterday clearing a logging road on my son Jay’s Hundred Acre Wood property near Bon Wier, Texas. I can hardly wait to see what the Stronger side of this team (the Universe) is going to make of that. I see a Ponderosa springing up in the East Texas Piney Woods. I’ll keep you posted as developments occur.
