The Fear Of Change

In a quote that is often attributed to the famed physicist Albert Einstein, arguable one of the greatest minds of the last century, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” Wise words indeed, but who really said these words that only became associated with Einstein in the nineteen-eighties years after he died April 18, 1955?

One of the most confining, deadly and damning fears in my estimation is the fear of change. I recently bought a touch stone that I carry in my pocket and even added the words on it to my daily mantra to remind me to live a life not just of serenity and wisdom but of courage.

We often emphasize the first part of the prayer/wish/intention, asking for Serenity to accept the things I can not change, when the type setter on the printing on the said touch stone obviously chose to emphasize by the size of the all-caps letters the words COURAGE and WISDOM. The saying in its longer form is called The Serenity Prayer, but that is only because serenity is the first thing requested. It could more aptly be named The Courage and Wisdom Prayer or I think most appropriately The Courage Prayer because wisdom is the result or should be of experience in choosing to make the better and the best changes.

Don’t be scared or afraid of change because beautiful things can grow and greater adventures can only begin when we are open to change.

David White
