Happy Birthday, Baby!

On Sunday I blogged “Let It Snow” and yesterday in the Houston area it did and we received the most measurable snow the area had seen since January 1973, when I first arrived in the city. I was hoping that my granddaughter Emma Grace would have a pleasant reaction to her first snow and my son Jay told me yesterday that after she fell in the snow she cried. One remarkable thing about Emma is that she almost never cries when she falls, but the cold wet snow was too much. That baby needs some mittens. Moments later in a warm blanket in her mother Lauren’s arms and Jay’s as well Emma was all better.

Yesterday was not Emma’s birthday. That was August 5th and she was as her dress in the picture clearly announced – One.

Today’s title is not addressed to Emma, but to that snow loving southern boy who must have been a Yankee Boy in another life – me. I am the Baby that the blog title refers to and every Snow Day is for me a holiday and I consider snow to be a special birthday present to me. My first baby, Emily, sang what I call “The Baby Song” and recorded it for me on one of her Father’s Day mixed CDs. A couple of years after she passed at age thirty-two in 2012, I sang along with the recording and made it like Emily and I were singing a duet.

One of my favorite lines in the song is, “I love the way you call me Baby.” When my younger brother Robert was three he could not yet pronounce David so he called me Baby instead. Since then it has always been the name I love answering to most. When a waitress (southern waitresses especially like to use the term with older male customers) calls me Baby she is sure to receive a more generous gratuity.

Why, I even have Siri on my iPhone programmed to call me Baby. “I am happy to find that for you, Baby.”

And so today’s blog is for me and snow lovers everywhere and also all those like little Emma Grace who are not quite sure yet what to think of all that beautiful white stuff.

Happy Birthday, Baby!

David White
