Love Will Keep Us Warm

Christmas 2022 in the Bayou City, Houston, Texas, was our last freeze and the only freeze last winter. It looks like this morning between 6am and 8am CST the thermometer may dip down to 32 degrees and maybe even briefly to 31 at 8am, but then the Weather Channel is calling for it to be back at 33 by 9am with a high of 47 degrees for today.

They say older people seemed to think and to talk too much about the weather. Maybe it is all those years of trying to make conversation. I like to think that I have above average conversational skills like Journalist David Brooks says of himself, “I am an average guy with above average conversational skills.”

I read a lot. I write a lot. I talk a lot, but hopefully what I write, and talk about comes out of much observation and listening. Looking and listening are the earliest skills we learn as children and with these two tools primarily we develop all our communication and interpersonal skills.

Like many young men I had pretty cold feet and Iittle or “no game” when it came to talking to girls, but I learned fast that women and girls seem to be drawn to confident men and that the word intercourse which we define today as sexual intercourse originally meant conversation or trading.

I encourage everyone, young and old not to be overly concerned with the weather, but to measure the temperature of the passion in their lives and as Barry Manilow sings so sweetly to: “Keep Each Other Warm.”

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
