Weavers

In the 2007 movie Wanted featuring Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, and Morgan Freeman, the premise is that an ancient guild of fabric weavers discovered that there was a subtle pattern in the weave that pointed to individuals by name who would be disruptive and destructive to society and that they should therefore be taken out of the equation. And so the weavers guild took on another more secretive role and trained a cadre of hit men to deal with those persons that the weave determined should be terminated.

Some years ago another of my favorite actors Timothy Olyphant played The Hitman. He worked for the Roman Catholic Church. I remember thinking, “I could be a hitman for God.” But then I remembered what Jesus said to the brothers James and John whom the group nicknamed “sons of thunder” because the wanted to call down fire on a city who had rejected Jesus’s message and theirs. Jesus told them, “You know not what Spirit you are of.”

A hit man for the Roman Catholic Church indeed. Some people thing Opus Dei (a group of conservative zealots within the Catholic Church is much like the Weaver’s Guild in Wanted with a agenda inspired by the spirit of this world (ego) and not by the Holy and Loving Spirit that lighted on Jesus like a dove after he was baptized by his cousin John.

Journalist David Brooks, whom I quoted yesterday, talks about people who have chosen not to feed their ego’s demands for success at any price especially the relationships and people in their lives, but rather to become weavers in the sense of bringing people together in this wonderful tapestry called life. When we truly love someone, their happiness is more important than our own. And we all want and need to be loved like that. We need to be the love we want to see in our lives. We all need to learn to be the best kind of weavers.

To paraphrase an old adage: “Oh, what a wonderful tapestry we weave when first practice and believe in the innate and infinite worth of every living soul, not just the winners, the pretty people, and the successful business people, but every single one… rich man, poor man, beggar man thief, doctor, lawyer, Indian Chief.. yes and all The Village People, straight or gay LBGQ…all the letters of the Alphabet.
