A Jealous God?
One of the so-called Seven Deadly Sins is Envy and a synonym of that word is Jealousy. How can a god who is purported to be holy, holy, holy be a jealous god? And as for last part of verse five above about punishing the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generations, this god definitely has some anger-management issues.
I have spent the greater part of my life in a “guilt religion” and one of the reasons that I hope to live past one hundred, in addition to watching my granddaughter Emma become an adult, is also to be able to say that I have spent the bigger portion of my life free of guilt, judgement, and condemnation.
I have no use for any religion that is all about guilt, judgement, and condemnation. The only religion that I am interested in is the old-time religion that makes me love everybody.
Jealousy and love cannot coexist. They are incompatible. To choose the way of love is to reject envy and jealousy as possibilities. If God is love then there is no more room for jealousy in his heart than there should be in ours. The God who is all in all has nothing to be jealous of or about.
