Baby Steps

A journey of ten thousand miles, or in this case ten thousand blogs, begins with one baby step. Today, I mark one third of the way to my goal of having written and published ten thousand blogs. Why, ten thousand you might ask. The reason I picked that number is because I read once that doing anything ten thousand times makes you an expert.

Someone has also said that talent is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Yet, I am here to tell you that the abundant life is not hard work. Jesus, believed by many to be the most perfect picture of the divine, said “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” I heard a preacher explain that verse one time by saying that Jesus’ yoke is easy is because he does all the heavy work and we get the light and easy part of the load. He takes the big leaps we only the baby steps.

This morning, as I rode my bike on this dark, foggy, and refreshingly mild December morning, I visualized the timber property that my son and I own near Bon Weir, Texas transformed into a compound to rival the Cartwright’s Ponderosa, the Kennedy’s Hyannis Port, or the Bush’s Kennebunkport. I am not just holding a vision or just wishing and hoping but, every chance I get I am taking baby steps to bring that vision into full focus.

Early tomorrow morning I intend to make the one hundred and fifty mile drive and to continue clearing the four-wheeler trail from the state road frontage to our “sweet pond.” My son suggested that I not widen it to a road wide enough for a car or truck just yet as that might encourage trespassers. I intend to measure between two large trees at the beginning of the trail/access road for a heavy chain that I plan to secure with two strong locks. The chain and locks are only meant to keep out the lawful folks. Lawless individuals will always find a way to get around fences, locks, etc. One just has to accept the idea that a certain amount of mischief and larceny come with the territory.

Someday when my son’s and my dreams for the property are fully realized there will be hiking, riding trails throughout the property, access roads to the pond, and hunting areas and a big house large enough to hold the entire clan for holiday gatherings and vacations from the big city. I see a big deck with a fishing peer at that sweet pond and even a small stable near the big house with a pasture for a a few horses and ponies for the little ones to ride.

Someone has said you know that are truly rich when you own horses for they are far more expensive to maintain than houses, boats, or even land. Holding a vision of what we want and taking baby steps toward it is how we realize our dreams. Not just wisin’ and hopin’ but by showing “Him/Her/Them” what we care about (what we want) by our baby steps so that “He/She/They” can bring it to pass.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
