The Gift of Grandchildren

My loving and lovely wife, Linda Lee, and I both turned forty the year our son, Jonathan (Jay) was born. She was always afraid that people would think we were his grandparents as many of our peers already had grandchildren when Jay was born. Even my oldest stepson by a previous marriage, David, had a one year old son that he named David. We named our son Jonathan David. Our fifteen month old granddaughter Emma Grace (Pictured above with Jay) has two grandpa Davids. You just cannot have too many Davids, I think. Yesterday was her other Grandpa David’s birthday and Jay, his dear wife Lauren, and Emma had a special birthday dinner with a him and Judy his wife, Emma’s other grandma.

My wife and I got to spend time with Emma and Jay earlier in the afternoon. Emma loves to take her dad’s cap off. It is great sport to her and she will yell “Cap” and snatch it off his head. I have been promising her for a couple of weeks that the next time we visit that I would wear a cap so that she could also snatch grandpa’s cap off. I remembered my promise yesterday and Emma honored me by playing the “Cap or Hat ” game several time.

I confess that B.E. (Before Emma) that I thought I would be a mostly absent grandpa since I plan to spend as much of my retirement years as I can traveling. When I am able to traveling again it will only be a couple of weeks at a time and spaced out so I never have to go more that a couple of weeks without seeing or being with a precious little girl who has already thoroughly “Cap-tivated” my heart and mind (pun intended.)

Allowing little ones, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to open up our hearts and minds helps us to love everyone better especially ourselves.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
