Top of the World

Bipolar and Schizophrenic people suffer from mood swings between high energy elation episodes called manic and low energy downs periods called depression. I suppose we all experience these emotions in our lives just not so desperately and so destructively.

The medication prescribed to treat these conditions although they mellow the severity of the lows also sadly sharply curtail the highs. I say “sadly” because it is those rapturous moments of ecstasy that add so very much to our lives. Indeed many spend their whole lives trying to find or to repeat those mountain top experiences where we felt even if ever so briefly on top of the world.

I was trying to sing a bit of the Westside Story song that goes “I have walked along down this street before, but the sidewalk never seemed to kiss my feet before” to my wife this morning. It was in response to her comments that she always lives in the dark. When she said that I thought of the line in the song, “On the street where you live.”

I breaks my heart that most days my wife seems to live in a very dark place hearing only discouraging voices that rob her of the joy that she once experienced so much of in life. We choose the place where we live. The expression goes, “If you are not happy where you live – move.” Much as I might like to, I cannot choose for my wife or anyone else really, only myself. The deeper that she slips into the darkness and the more she listens to those mean and hateful voices, the less she can see the light or hear encouraging words.

Where do you live? I choose to live on top of the world instead of allowing a world of problems to crush my spirit. This is my dream and I intend to make it and keep it a sweet one no mater what.
