Happy Birthday Connie Bailey Watkins
Fifty years ago this last spring I dated a lovely young woman in college for a couple of months. In August that year she married Roger Sherman Watkins who it turned out would become one of my favorites if not the best friend of my life. Roger passed a couple of years ago and I am sad to say that he fell out with me the last several years of his life and we were no longer close. I blamed Facebook for magnifying differences of opinion that we would have just laughed about before Facebook.
Oldsters like myself have a tendency to get set in their ways and opinions and are tempted the think foolish thoughts about the “good old days.”
I believe that “these are the good old days.” Still in living as in driving it is a good thing to check the rear view mirror occasionally to consider where you have been and to look forward to where you are going. Yet, life is lived most fully in the now.
Today, now, is Connie Bailey Watkins’ birthday and I wish her the very best. She had a lot of wonderful years with Roger and some probably not so wonderful. They had together two fine children and two wonderful grandsons. And since I have for one year, three months and one day been a grandpa, I now know what a great reason for living and enjoying the now that is.
So happy birthday to that once beautiful young woman who is today a beautiful grandma and as the birthday song goes: “Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy day, Dear Connie, happy birthday to you. And many more.!!!”

Listen to the end and “Stay right here, for these are the good old days.”
