Misconception

It is so easy for us to get things wrong. Yesterday morning I thought that it was Thursday so I referred to it as the last day of my seventy-fourth year and that is of course today. But that misconception is a good segue or transition into perhaps a more controversial subject regarding misconceptions.

I recall that fifty years ago when I was turning twenty-four that I was caught up in a very conservative fundamentalist religion that had very strong opinions regarding abortion being murder and a sin. Roman Catholics, many of them, go so far as to say that that any type of birth control is wrong and that even in cases of rape and incest that women should be forced to carry and give birth to children they do not want. There is an interesting statistic regarding a dramatic drop in violent crime in the United States that may be a direct result of a generation of unwanted children not being born after the Roe V Wade Supreme Court decision made abortion legal in 1973.

Children ought to be conceived in love and unwanted children are far more likely to act out their frustrations upon what they conceive to be a cold and uncaring world. What chance does a child have if even his or her mother does not want them. The answer is slim to none. This type of misconception should be prevented.

It is a sad state of affairs when we as a people choose to elect a convicted sex offender to the highest office in the land and that he has already picked three men also sex offenders to be in his cabinet. In addition, at least two of the conservative Supreme Court justices, one he put there, both Roman Catholics, have been accused of sexual harassment in their past.

Why is it that men still continue to think, too many of them, that they have a right to force themselves on women, that women have no right to choose? A growing number of women have decided to not have a man in their lives because men cannot be trusted. I honestly cannot blame them for coming to that sad conclusion.

Many reasons are being put forward as to why Donald J. Trump was elected to a second term as President of the United States when we obviously know the type of man he is. I believe the biggest reason is that men and too many women think a man even an especially man is better than a woman for the job. That is a misconception.

If you find today’s blog offense or not a particularly encouraging word, I offer this – misconceptions can often be corrected or better yet prevented when we know the cause.
