Choose Happy
There is a common expression some Christians like to use as a good-bye. In their bubbles most Polly Anna voice they offer, “Have a blessed day.” To them “blessed” has some kind of religious meaning as they “know a guy” who can give you a good deal on whatever it is you want or need. The clear definition of blessed is happiness per the dictionary:

And Jesus usage of the same word in the Beatitudes i.e. “Blessed are the meek, blessed are the poor in spirit…etc.” are render in the new translations, “Happy are…”
Had she not decided to end her own life twenty-four years ago my mom would have turned ninety-three today. Happy Birthday, Mama. My mom was a Christian, but she was not a happy person. My dad did not attend church, yet professed to be a Baptist. He was a far happier person than my mom and the old adage “Happy wife, happy life” did not keep him from enjoying his life despite my mom’s somebody spoke my cup outlook on life.
Good and bad things happen to all of us, no exceptions. I do not believe happiness is bestowed like a gift from on high nor is it the result of a happy wife or happy husband, or children. Happiness, I think, is a choice. The first five years of my school life were mostly unhappy because I chose to be miserable over missing my mommy and refuse to make much of an effort to make the best of my situation. In the fifth grade my family moved yet again so I had to adjust to a new school where most of my classmates had gone since first grade. But my favorite cousin was in my class. She was pretty and several of the guys in class befriended me because of her. We had a pretty young lady teacher, Miss Lane and we boys all vied to be the one to carry her briefcase into school each morning. She drove a royal blue Volkswagen Beetle. We boys, her boys, got to school early and watched for Miss Lane’s Beetle to arrive. She was a happy lady and smileda lot. She made me miss my mom a lot less.
In fifth grade, I began to learn that even though things do not always go our way and even if those we love are not always happy with us or withtheir lives that we can still choose to be happy.
I guess what I am trying to say is instead of saying “Have a blessed day” I say “Chose Happy.”
