If I Could
The great line from Dirty Harry in the movie Quantum Force is “ A man has got to know his limitations.” Today’s song, linked below, is all about one of those persistent perceived limitations. I believe that the best reason for believing in a higher power outside ourselves is that we want to have someone with greater power who can do the things we cannot to pray to in times when we feel out of our depth. Such is the case when we receive bad news like the guy in the song that a friend or love one is running out of time and we wish that we could give them more.
We take some comfort from the knowledge that even as one goes out, one comes in. My wife and I delight in our now almost fifteen month old granddaughter Emma Grace. I got to play chase with her on Sunday and her giggle and great smile swelled my heart till I thought it might burst in my chest. I ordered her a little teddy bear that is supposed to come today. If it does I will write a blog about it tomorrow with a picture so you can see it.
I plan to give it to her this weekend. Some might think I should wait and give it to her for Christmas. Every day for a fifteen month old should be like Christmas. Instead of spending a great deal of time worrying about things beyond our pay grade or power we should focus on what we can do. A wise manager once told me upon giving me a big promotion at work, after I had applied a second time for that same position. He said that I should control the controllables and not worry about the things that were beyond my control.
That is advice I try to live by everyday and try to share with as many as I can.
