Day Break and Break Fast

The English language with all its hodgepodge of words and phrases added from many other languages is still a wonderful communications vehicle for painting pictures of our thoughts. Today I would like to spend a few moments on two short phrases that have the word break in them, day break and breakfast.

The break of day is when we get a break from the long dark night as light begins to appear in the eastern sky as the revolving earth turns its face toward the sun. Breakfast is the first meal of the day that breaks our overnight fast.

The words a candy commercial are running through my head as I write this: “Give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar.” We all need a break from time to time. Give yourself a break whether from your darker thoughts or from depriving yourself food or drink. There is some wisdom in the paraphrased proverb, “Let us eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we diet.”

I conclude today’s blog with a line from my daily mantra, “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in my sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
