Keep Looking Up
Did you ever notice how often that good advice comes in three(s). Today’s title is a prime candidate. A long time pastor throughout most of my twenties, thirties and early to mid-forties adopted the three word phrase as his personal catch phrase. I cannot hear it or say it without thinking of him. He was not a particularly buoyant or positive person so I think he said it as much as a reminder for himself as for others.
A few years back, “Eat, Pray, Love” and “Live, Love, Laugh” were popular three word admonitions. Why, even the rather pessimistic author of the Book of Ecclesiastes after going on and on about everything being nothing more than vanity and vexation of spirit did offer three pieces of good advice, “Eat, Drink, and Be Merry – for tomorrow we die.” I am sure his friends sang to him at every party he ever attended, “Every party needs a pooper, that’s why we invited you, Party Pooper.”
Snoopy and Woodstock above have it right. The secret of life truly is looking up. So what if you step in poop occasionally. It wipes and washes off unlike the indelible dark stain on our soul if we are forever down cast and looking down. I have not quoted it lately, one of my all time favorite poems.
