Why The Emphasis On Faith?
Believe, we are told and we will be saved. Believe we are told and we will be cured. Believe we are told and all will be explained, but not now, at some later date. I am sorry, but these are the lines of con-men, salesmen, lawyers, doctors the PHD kind and the MD kind), and politicians.
I saw a piece yesterday where a reputable news agency claimed to find 162 inaccuracies and outright lies in a short political interview recently. What is wrong with us when we are so conditioned to believe without question that we accept such deceit?
What we accept as true should be based on empirical evidence. Sadly much of what we have been taught to believe is told to hide the nasty truth. Winners write the histories and hide the parts of the story that do not show them in the best light.
A line that many believers consider heresy goes, “I discard any beliefs that are no longer serving me.” It makes a lot of sense to me. I am reminded of a scene from a classic book and movie, The Wizard of Oz. It is toward the end of the story after Dorothy and company have defeated the wicked witch of the west and brought back her broom as proof that they have met the conditions the Wizard had set before he would grant their requests. The Great Oz is thundering out at them overhead when Toto, Dorothy’s little dog pulls back the curtains to reveal a little man pulling levers and speaking into a microphone. The last line Oz thunders is, “Pay no attention to the little man behind the curtain.” That my friends is what we need most to do – to pay attention to who is pulling the levers and asking us to believe. A red flag should always go up when we hear, “Trust me, I alone am the answer.” No matter who is saying it.
If it sounds too good to be true it is most often a calculated lie designed to enrich the perpetrator.
