True Treasure
Today is my granddaughter Emma Grace White’s first birthday. Yesterday, rummaging through the attic I came across a treasure, a little rocking chair that I assembled from a kit, stained, and finished for my little girl, Emily Elaine White. Sadly, Emily passed at thirty-two years of age twelve years ago so little Emma will never get to know her Auntie Em first hand. But she will know her through pictures stories, videos, and recordings of Emily singing her song to anyone who came along.
When I spotted the rocking chair covered in a clear plastic bag, it was if I could hear Emily saying “I want Emma to have my chair to remember me by.” I always had a hard time saying “No” to Emily and I am not about to start now.
Even before Emma’s arrival, a month early, a year ago, I had gotten her an American Girl Bitty Baby through a friend in Wisconsin and bought for her a small pink safe to keep her treasures in. My wife and I gave her a silver dollar and a quarter ounce gold coin to go in her safe. The plan is to do that each year on her birthday so she will have a safe full of silver and gold, but it will be up to those of us who love her to teach her what true treasure is.
I trust my son and daughter-in-law to teach her that along with her other set of grandparents, my wife and I, her great grandmother Betty, her extended family and the host of friends she will encounter in life. Love is the pearl of great price and where your heart is there will your treasure be also as a wise man once said.
If Emily were still with us in body she would be calling Emma today to sing the happy birthday song to her. In lieu of that I have put a YouTube link below to Dancing With Spock (the two-person band consisting of Emily White -vocalist & guitarist and saxman Toby Harris, her true love) performing the original song True composed and sung by my Emily, Emma’s Auntie Em.
Now that is a treasure one does not need a safe to keep safe. This much is true. Someday I hope to see Emma rocking her Bitty Baby in Emily’s rocker. Oops, I mean, Emma’s rocker.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
