This Time Last Year

This time last year Jay and Lauren and two sets of soon to be grandparents were anxiously awaiting the arrival of a little girl who would change not only our status, but our lives. All my friends had told me how wonderful it was to be a grandparent. I admit that I was skeptical having thought myself already quite an accomplished lover. Jesus wrote, “No greater love hath any man than to lay down his life for his friends.” Yet he was never a mother, a father, nor a grandparent.

I heard someone say just yesterday, “What is it with you guys, you and Jesus thinking you have to lay down your lives. Surely there is a better way to make a point than dying. Dying is the easy part. It is living that is the hardest part of life.” Watching those we love make those disastrous choices that bring them so much pain and misery. The only two choices in life are to win some or to learn some.

Our little girl Emma Grace White will be one year old this Monday, what a lot of winning and learning she has ahead. As painful as that process might be to watch I would not miss a minute of it for the world. If due to situations beyond my control I miss seeing some of the chapters of her story in person rest assured that I will join that great crowd of witnesses watching her race, her dash, through life from the sidelines.

This time last year she was in the starting blocks impatient to get started. She arrived about a month early and took us all by storm. All my friend say “Spoil her” to which I reply with a thousand watt smile on my face, “You bet I will for she is my treasure.”

Your friend, fellow traveler, and Emma’s Papa,

David White
