Find A Penny…

Today marks the birthday of my wife of almost thirty-five years, Linda Lee. She is and will ever be in my heart and mind as pretty as a shiny new penny. It is after all the beholder and holder that truly assigns worth and value to anything. Yesterday, I cited one of my favorite lines from the U.S. Constitution, “All men (Women, men, girls, and boys) are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” We are everyone valued, valuable, and endowed by our Creator with inestimable worth and accorded by Him/Her certain rights consistent with our inheritance and Who and Whose we are. They who would deny that value and those rights to any member of “the Family” because they erroneously deem them “lesser brethren” will one day see the error of such ego inspired assessments. In one place it is written that even their blood cries out to heaven for justice.

But back to that pretty penny I mentioned. Several quotes come to mind as I think of my beloved birthday girl:

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever”

“Where your treasure is there will be your heart be also”

And most appropriate to today’s blog, “Find a penny pick it up and all day long you’ll get good luck.”

We live in a day when many people think that pennies are worthless and throw them out considering them unworthy to be in their pockets or purses. The U.S. pennies were changed after 1981 and are no longer copper but aluminum with a thin copper clad, so in one sense they do not have the intrinsic value they once had much as we when we age do not have the same strength, vitality, and perhaps we longer possess that new penny shine. Still no matter our outward appearance or performance, we are of inestimable worth because of Who and Whose we are. We are children of the Universe and joint heirs to all there is or will ever be.

Pretty profound stuff, us. Each of us be we silver grey, golden, or brown as button on the outside are nevertheless of more value than can be weighed or quantified. Nevertheless is a big word, actually three words stuck together without spaces in between – never-the-less, meaning equal in the sense that matters most, who we are and to whom we belong. That is my point exactly, and that spelled-out in Constitutional quote above.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White

Wishing Linda Lee and all you birthday girls and boys the best birthday ever.
