Hurricane Beryl
As I write this at approximately 6:45 am Central Daylight Savings Time, Hurricane Beryl has been on shore for about two and a half hours and is still at category one storm. Houston, Texas is experiencing the wet side of the storm. I have lived in Houston since 1973 for the most part and have seen my share of storms and more than a few hurricanes, but never one with so much rain and high speed winds this far north of Galveston.
We lost power for about a week due to a straight line storm that passed through the area a couple of months ago which took down a large pecan tree in an empty lot next to our home. It fell on the power lines and there were so many power outages in the area that it took a week for the electric repairs crews to get to us. So far there are in the Houston area over half a million customers without power. We are among the fortunate ones so far, but they are saying we have at least several hours of high winds and heavy rain before Beryl moves on north east of us.
It is starting to get light out so I can see how wet and windy it is outside. I love rain and can honestly say that I do enjoy a good storm. By this time tomorrow evening everything will look so green and lush. There will be a lot of clean-up after the storm. It is not the first nor will it be the last. When you live near the Gulf Coast, tropical storms and even hurricanes are just a part of life, as are ice storms and blizzards in the north country. I miss the ice and snow that I got to see and experience on work assignments up north. But then I missed these wonderful rain events up there too.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
Staying dry and waiting on the storm to pass,
David White
P.S. Over a million power customers with outages now. We lost power shortly after 9 am, but are still doing fine and dandy. Still high winds and intermittent heavy rains, but this too shall pass.
