When The Rich Prevail Justice Fails

I recently streamed a PBS Special on The Gilded Age when in the eighteen nineties the new rich in this country courted the old money high society in New York City. They proclaimed themselves the new royalty, above the rule law, flaunting the great disparity of their wealth and holding lavish parties in their guilted palatial homes.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court after six months delay, that all but insures that the former President will not have to answer for failing to uphold his oath to support and defend the Constitution of these United States, stated in effect that the President is above the law like a king.

We fought a war with Great Britain almost two-hundred and fifty years ago because we believed that no man, not even the mad king George, was above the law.

The Supreme Court’s approval rating is at an all time low with many believing at least two of the Justices should have recused themselves from the case for obvious bias not to mention ethical lapses in accepting large donations from billionaires with other cases before the court. When our judges and political leaders are in the pockets of the rich justice fails.

You might be wondering where is the encouraging word in all of this. Those who would attempt to tip the scales of justice in their favor should realize that a day of reckoning awaits them as well. I am reminded of a phrase in the Old Testament, “How are the mighty fallen.” And a New Testament one, that says in so many words that corrupt judges will get their due.

A little motto I heard as a child comes to mind as well, “You cannot do wrong and get by, no matter how hard you may try.” The rich who have no respect for justice are above all the most to be pitied for they will reap the whirlwind. Justice will prevail.
