Glory Versus Grandeur

Glory has weight, substance while grandeur only the pretense of them for it is merely smoke and mirrors. Grandeur is the canned or orchestrated applause while glory is true and unsought recognition.

In a couple of days we will see two old men standing side by side in front of us, attempting to share their vision of what makes America great. Young men might be excused for seeing the office of President as Savior and Defender of the free world and buying into that comic book idea of heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, and Captain Marvel. Super powers and miracles are the subjects of legends, myths, and religion. People in their late seventies and early eighties should know and very well that we mortals have feet of clay and that even in our prime that leaping tall buildings in a single bound and out running speeding bullets should not be selling points on our resume.

Both men in Thursday night’s debate believed that at this critical time in our country’s history that they are needed at the helm of the ship of state. Both have had a turn already. And we the American people and the world at large have a pretty good idea which way they intend to steer the ship. To glory or grandeur that is the choice. Compare the two dictionary definitions below:

The difference between the two words might seem subtle or small, yet even the smallest turn of the rudder or wheel can soon have the ship way off course. The choice between glory or grandeur is not a small one. The bigger, taller, younger man is not always the best man, but the man with the clearest understanding of who he is and where he wants to lead.

Look closely and choose wisely, America.
