This Old House
We put so much emphasis on where people live that I think we often mistake a temporary residence for the eternal being who for a relative few moments in time lives there. We are, my friends, way more than these momentary dwellings.
Grant you pretty houses often get a lot of attention, yet far more lovely and entertaining is the person within if we only allow ourselves to get to know them. People young and old spend a lot of time house hunting.
I am reminded of a gospel song from the nineteen-fifties called This Old House. This singer says, “I ain’t got time to fix the shingles…etc.” Those of us who have lived in a particular house for a long time know that a certain amount of maintenance is necessary to keep it from failing down around us.
Both Jesus and Paul spoke of a promised new place to dwell after this adventure in time and space is over. The old joke goes, “Everybody wants to go to heaven, but no one seems to be in a hurry.”
Home they say is where the heart is and also that a house is not a home. Just a few thoughts on this old house.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
