Space and Time, Time and Space
We are, I believe, traveling through time and space. I heard a great quote yesterday. A son said to his dad describing his sister’s self isolation from the family that she just needs space. The dad replied, “Young people are always talking about needing space, but they do not realize that we have plenty of space. It is time than is in short supply.”
I have been young and now I am older. The nineteen forties popular cowboy song by Cole Porter, Don’t Fence Me In, still appeals to me. Though for the present family commitments have me quite anchored in place, I still hope to yet explore new vistas and new horizons before my time here is done.
Even so my almost seventy-four years have taught me how precious the moments are and that we should not squander them, but make the most of them with people we love. The epitaph, “Life is too short” is a sentiment that all over the age of thirty know all to well for most already have seen the passing of more than a few family members, dear friends, and beloved pets.
I have often quoted the story of the little boy who was already wiser than his years regarding time, the reason we are here, and dogs. In trying to explain why dogs have shorter life spans than people the young man astutely said, “We are here to learn how to love and because dogs already know how to to that, they do not need to be here as long as we do.”
Let us make the most of the time we have.
