The Birds Are Singing
Often the first sounds that I awake to are birds singing to greet the new day. The sun has not risen yet but these creatures sing in anticipation and gratitude that the long night is over and the light is coming.
Why do birds sing? I am sure there is some scientific sounding reason, but poet that I am I think birds sing because they trust their loving and infinite source to provide for them.
We would do well to remember Jesus words to the worriers of his day when he said, “Consider the birds of the air and the lilies of the field for they toil not nor spin and yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”
A movie called Lilies of the Field took its title from the above verse. The gist of the movie plot is that a group of German speaking Catholic nuns in the American southwest believe a traveling black man has been sent to them to build a church for them so that the poor people around them will have a place to worship.
It is an important tool fighting in the impulse to panic and to worry, believing in something greater than ourselves even if that is only the highest best version of ourselves. Often religious groups are accused of creating God in their own image.
Consider the birds of the air and the lilies of the field for they bear testimony to a higher power, a loving and infinite source. That is why birds sing and flowers bloom to remind us to be glad and grateful.
“I am so glad and grateful that everything that I could ever want or need is already mine and coming to me at just the right time and in just the right way from my loving and infinite source.” Amen, amen, hallelujah.
Your friend and fellow traveler.

I believe they sing the song their Creator gives.
