Your Song

It is fitting that the the last song that I chose to include in this months long posting of my karaoke style songs is one of Rocketman Elton John’s first hit song in the U.S. in 1970, Your Song. I spent the bigger part of that year in the Republic of South Vietnam as a teletype repairman for the 509th Radio Research Group Headquarters Company at Tan Son Nhut Airbase just outside Saigon. The 509th Radio Research Group was the designation of the Army Security Agency in Vietnam. It was to say the least a very interesting assignment.

I remember enjoying this song the first time I heard it and very quickly committing the words and melody to memory so that I could play it again and again in my head anytime I wanted. I really made it my song singing it to myself for many years even before I discovered karaoke.

I have not sung karaoke for several years now and my voice, which was never star quality, is a little worse for wear. I do still love to make what I call “a joyful noise.” And my loving and lovely wife still often says, “Sing me a song.” More often than not I play one of these recorded songs and sing along with it for her.

I have over the course of this blog attached links to my own version of songs that seemed to fit with the theme of a particular blog. For a long time I had wanted to go through the almost three hundred recordings and move them one by one into a folder called David Sings. So I hit up this idea after reposting blogs inspired by my children’s book readings called appropriately enough, David Reads Children’s Books. I really have a gift for coming up with titles. Ha

Anyway I have used my Karaoke recordings as inspiration for several months of blogs and got a chance to cull out more than a few that did not make the Final Cut. I hope those that did have found their way attached to these blogs to ears that found them encouraging. Sung, typed, or spoken, this space is all about the encouraging word.
