Yesterday

Today’s song was released in the U.S. as a single on September 13, 1965. I was fourteen almost fifteen and still dealing with my first heartache so for a long time I thought it was the most beautiful love song ever written and performed. I was a Beatles fan and especially a Paul McCartney fan.

I recall thinking back then that Barbra Streisand’s hit from Funny Girl about people needing people being the luckiest people in the world was also a very great song. Years later I read a psychiatrist’s review of the lyrics of that song in which he said that the song’s author and Barbra had gotten it all wrong. He said that people who need people are the most unlucky people in the world.

Too much focus on yesterday is also, I have come to believe, a very unhealthy way to live. It not only closes us off to the possibility of better days ahead but robs us of the most important day of all – today. Probably a better love song lyric to live by would be : “Today, while the blossoms still cling to the vine, I’ll taste your strawberries and drink your sweet wine. A million tomorrows will all pass away e’er I forget the love that is ours today.”

“Today is a gift that is why they call it the present.”

Rejoice and be glad in it.

David White
