Walking Man

But for the mothers, sisters, and wives in our lives many if not most of us men would undoubtedly find ourselves walking men like the man featured in today’s song. Abraham Lincoln is said to have remarked, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my Angel mother.” It is also highly unlikely that Abraham Lincoln would have ever become a politician let alone President had he not married Mary Todd who pushed him to be more than he ever hoped to be.

That is what mothers especially but all the women in our lives do for us (mothers, sisters, wives, aunts, nieces, daughters, granddaughters, girlfriends, and lovers.) They push us to be the best versions of ourselves, they make us want to be better men.

On this Mother’s Day I want to pay a special tribute to all the women in my life. Especially those who never had children of their own, but still channeled that loving mother instinct in to acts of kindness and compassion for others. We have all been beneficiaries of these wonderful women as well.

I am moved to make this general and specific tribute by a remark a sales lady made to my wife yesterday as we were buying a Mother’s Day Card, gift card and a rose for our daughter-in-law Lauren who today celebrates her first Mother’s Day as a mom herself. The sales lady said, “If you are a mother, Happy Mother’s Day” as if Mother’s Day was only for mothers. It is not but as a line from my daily mantra says, “This is the day that the Lord and I have made, we will rejoice in it.”

I rejoice because in large degree to the influence of all the women, mothers and others, in my life, that I am more than just a walking man with nothing to say and nothing to keep me in the same place for any length of time.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers and others out there who have been touched by a mother’s love and honor its influence in and upon us all.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White

Happy Mother’s Day, Lauren and Emma Grace.
