Walking In Memphis
On Sunday September 9, 1956 I was five years old and had just completed my first week in the first grade at Hemlock Elementary School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Although it was a “school night” my parents had allowed me stay up to see a portion of the Ed Sullivan show because as a special guest that night Mr. Sullivan had a young man from Tennessee that was taking the nation by storm, Elvis Presley.
I grew up watching Elvis movies on TV. One of my favorites was Follow That Dream. The title song says, “I’m gonna follow that dream wherever that dream may lead me. I’m gonna follow that dream to find the love I need.”
Like a lot of performers Elvis found his thrill not on blueberry hill, but singing before large live audiences. I have sung in karaoke bars and on a few occasions received a little applause for my efforts still never anything like what Elvis experienced when he performed.
Today’s song talks about walking in Memphis and seeing the ghost of Elvis. Recently, shopping with my wife and her mom, I saw a pair of blue suede shoes. They looked like they would fit me and I almost bought them. For just a moment I thought of the beginning and ending words of today’s song about Elvis, “Put on my blue suede shoes…”
Put on your blue sued shoes and join me and Elvis for a little walk in Memphis.
Your friend and fellow traveler, life long Elvis fan,
David White
