True Grit
They say that most of the time when remakes of movies are made that people who see the original first prefer it and the actors. Like wise often when people see the remake first and then watch the original they tend to prefer the one they watched first.
I can think of three examples off hand where that is not at all the case for me. I saw the John Wayne 1969 version of True Grit, from which today’s song comes, many time before seeing Jeff Bridges in the 2010 remake of the movie. I love both movies pretty much equally.
The same is true of the Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr 1957 Affair To Remember (that I saw first) which is a remake of the 1939 version starring Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne in the leading roles. The earlier version of the movie was titled simply Love Affair.
The third example I have to share is the movie Sabrina. I first saw the 1995 version starting Harrison Ford and Julia Ormand and only later saw the 1953 version with Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn. These last two have more differences in the story and lines while the other two examples are closer, but the amazing thing to me is that I find them all so uniquely wonderful that have watched them over and find it impossible to pick a favorite.
For that reason I have adopted Papa in The Shack’s way of describing Her/His children as my way of describing most everything as not my favorite but “One of my favorites.” I do not believe the first of Moses’ Ten Commandments was written by God, only a man could have written that for any true and loving Creator/Parent could not be a “jealous God” nor incite jealousy in his children by having a pick or even a favorite people.
If according to Gene Autry, “Santa Claus loves all God’s children and that makes everything right” and according to a popular Sunday School song, “Red, brown, yellow, black, and white, they are precious in His sight – Jesus loves the little children of the world” then in stands to reason that God loves all his creation and children the same. There are no “red headed step-children” nor “black sheep” in this family for we are all loved and cherished the same by our loving and infinite source. Or that is at least how this guy, one of God’s favorite children, sees it.
