To Make You Feel My Love

I think down deep inside of most if not all of us is the desire to love and be loved like today’s song describes. Why is that? The narrow fundamentalist Christian cult I was raised in said it is because God is love and created us with a God-shaped part missing from our heart that only He could fill.

After giving that matter a lot of thought, I have come to believe a somewhat different explanation of our craving to love and be loved. It does not involve a missing part nor a fall from grace requiring a divine sacrifice to make things right, but is about who and whose we are, have always been, and will always be. We are loving, we are lovable, we are altogether lovely for we are love Himself/Herself incarnate, that means in physical form in this material world carved out of the construct we call time and space. We are here not to earn our wings, but to spread them and to fly.

I have more than a few times now concluded this daily blog called the encouraging word with a quote from the end of Nat King Cole’s early hit song, Nature Boy. It goes: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” I have come to believe that it is not about memorizing lines or playing a role, but about finding out this is the part, the role, that we were meant to play. You’re a natural, Kid.
