Take This Sinking Boat
Many of the songs that I recorded my karaoke versions of did not make the final cut and are not included in this last pass through them before they are packed away with all the faded photographs and tickets torn in half. The lyrics to this lovely if somewhat melancholy ballad remind me of a gospel song quite popular when I was a boy called This Old House.
There is a line in the New Testament that I have alluded to several times in these now over three thousand blogs. It goes: “We have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency might be of God.” The essence of Who and Whose we are, our true identity, is not limited by the house we live in or the boat we came on. Rest assured whether we have always treated our house or boat the best or not eventually it will crumble to dust or sink below the waves.
Today’s song says, “Take this sinking boat and point it home…you have a choice, you make it now.” The poet has said:

Whether we rage, resign, celebrate, or pine go we will for it is a fate that awaits us all. Even Jesus after suffering a painful death that we all hope to be spared, yielded the breath of life that animated his body to return to the source from whence it came. In the evidently mostly poetic creation story it is written that God fashioned man out of the dust of the earth, breathed into it him, them, us the breath of life, and that he, she, we became a living soul.
For most of us the only memorial to our journey, our voyage through life, will be a dash between to dates carved in stone and place over our earthly remains, that crumbled house, or sunken boat. I do not believe that is the end of the story, well maybe it is the end of a particular story, but not the final breath or final word. With long time Let’s Make A Deal game show host Monty Hall, I believe, “There are bigger deals ahead” complete with bigger and better homes and sleeker and faster boats for these holy ghosts to haunt and inhabit.
Bon voyage, safe travels, and happy haunting.
Your friend, fellow traveler, and friendly ghost,
David White
