Sweet Baby James & Long Ago And Far Away
Today is Twofer Friday and features two of my favorite James Taylor songs. Of the two, Sweet Baby James was more popular and more widely known while the lesser known Long Ago And Far Away is more hauntingly beautiful, I think. When I was a boy in the nineteen fifties most little boys wanted to be cowboys singing “good night you moonlight ladies.” But by the time these songs came out in the late nineteen sixties I and my peers were finishing up our teenaged years and the more melancholy Long Ago And Far Away captures the memory of all that teenaged angst.
Much has changed in the fifty plus years since these songs were introduced and yet I think some things are still the same. Little boys still dream of being cowboys and teenagers are still full of angst. We landed on the moon long ago and far away and are headed back there again this time to make a buck, not always the most noble of motives. Hopefully we can do a better job of sharing the wealth than we have here on earth.
Best wishes to all you would be cowboys and astronauts.
Your friend and fellow traveler through space and time,
