Not That Different

Today’s song originally recorded by Collin Raye is one of my favorites and expresses one of the key elements of what I believe. One of ego’s biggest lies is the myth of separation, that we are different, less than or more than our brothers and sisters. We are not. As the First People put it so well we all have the same Mother Earth and the same Father Sky. The Jesus the Christ story is our story for we are all born of heaven and earth as he was said to be and we are not that different.

I often site Jesus two commandments that are actually three, that we love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and that we love our neighbors as we love ourselves. If we allow ourselves to do that we realize that the three are one, that we are one. As the Apostle put it, “There is no longer Jew nor Gentile, male nor female, for we are one in Christ.” Christ is a title that we share by our common heritage. It means “annointed” and that term means picked to be royalty.

Though I have rejected the claim that any group are God’s chosen people, I was raised in a fundamentalist cult that believes it is the one true Church of God. That idea seems so alien and asinine to me now, yet I do recall a song they like to sing that has for me a wider truth that applies I think to everyone. The first verse goes:

There are no half brothers and sisters and no step children nor bastards in the kingdom of heaven. May the Lord’s Prayer come true in our hearts, “On earth as it is in heaven.”
